When we think about the back-to-school season, most of us picture new backpacks, class schedules, and after-school activities. What we don’t picture, but should, is how this time of year can also mark an increase in risk for children being targeted by traffickers.

Why Back-to-School Season is a Vulnerable Time

Traffickers are opportunists. They look for cracks in a child’s safety net, moments when routines change, stress levels spike, or support systems aren’t as close as they were over the summer.

Here are a few reasons this season can increase risk:

New social environments – Whether it’s a new school, new friends, or joining extracurriculars, kids may be exposed to unfamiliar peers (and adults) who could have harmful intentions.

Online connections – Many kids use the start of school to connect with new classmates on social media, sometimes without fully knowing them. Traffickers often exploit these online openings.

Unsuspecting adults – Teachers, coaches, and staff are dedicated to helping kids succeed, but they may not be trained to recognize the subtle signs of grooming.

Gaps in supervision – After-school hours, sports practices, and club meetings can leave kids in unsupervised situations where predators take advantage.

 

The Grooming Process Often Starts Small

Grooming rarely looks like a kidnapping from a movie. More often, it’s a slow build, a “friendship” that turns into manipulation. Traffickers gain trust, offer gifts or attention, work to make an emotional connection, and isolate their target from family or healthy friends. Back-to-school season gives predators a fresh field of potential victims to approach, both online and in person.
