What Is Child Trafficking?

Child trafficking refers to the exploitation of children through force, fraud, or coercion—most often for the purposes of commercial sex or labor. In the case of sex trafficking, the law is even more direct: any commercial sex act involving a minor is considered trafficking, regardless of coercion. Why? Because children cannot consent. Exploiting them is abuse, plain and simple.

This isn’t just a legal classification—it’s a lived trauma. Victims are manipulated, threatened, beaten, and isolated. Many are groomed over time, preyed on by traffickers who pretend to care before turning to violence and control.

This is abuse in every sense of the word: emotional, psychological, physical, and sexual.

It’s Happening to Our Children

There’s a persistent myth that trafficking is something that happens “over there”—in far-off places or Hollywood movies. But the truth is far closer to home.

  • An estimated 100,000 to 300,000 children are at risk of trafficking every year in the U.S.

  • The average age of entry into sex trafficking is just 15 years old.

  • More than 85% of sex trafficking victims identified in the U.S. are American citizens or are here legally.

These are children in our schools, on our social media platforms, living in our neighborhoods. Many are vulnerable due to prior abuse, poverty, unstable housing, or being in the foster care system. But trafficking doesn’t discriminate—any child can be targeted.

Calling trafficking what it really is—child abuse—matters. It removes the veil of confusion and shame that so often surrounds victims. It shifts the blame from the child to the abuser. And it pushes us, as a society, to respond with the urgency and care that these young survivors deserve.
