Understanding the Threat: How Human Trafficking Can Happen Close to Home

Human trafficking is a grave issue that affects millions of people worldwide, including right here in our communities. It’s a crime that often goes unnoticed, but its impact is devastating. One of the most alarming aspects of human trafficking is that it can happen to anyone, and often, the trafficker is someone the victim knows and trusts.

The Reality of Trafficking

Imagine a young girl named Lauren. She’s bright, friendly, a good student, and active in the volleyball community. She has a close-knit group of friends and a supportive mom. Her dad is out of the picture, forcing her mom to work a lot, leaving Lauren to sometimes feel lonely at home. Lauren’s life takes a dark turn when she meets someone who seems trustworthy but has sinister intentions.

The Grooming Process

Traffickers often use a method called grooming to gain the trust of their victims. This process can be slow and insidious, making it difficult for the victim to recognize the danger until it’s too late. Lauren often must take the city bus home from volleyball practice while her mom works. On the bus, she made a friend, Amanda, an overly friendly, college girl who always seems to have fun stories. However, Amanda is working for a trafficker and while Lauren thinks she has a new friend, Amanda has started the grooming process by offering emotional support, bringing little gifts, and creating the feeling of friendship Lauren craves.

The Trap

Once Amanda has gained Lauren’s trust, she invites her to a party. Amanda appears excited to introduce Lauren to her boyfriend, Jason. Jason and Amanda quickly begin to isolate her from her support network. They play up her loneliness and manipulate her into believing that her mom, her friend, and her teammates don’t care about her and won’t understand her situation. This isolation makes Lauren more dependent on Amanda and Jason, who then exploit her vulnerability.

The How

Amanda talks Lauren into taking some fun and flirty photos one afternoon. Lauren is uncomfortable but she doesn’t want to disappoint her new friends. Shortly after Jason starts posting ads for Lauren on a website where those who purchase sex go. However, in the ad, he calls her Lucy and says she is 19. When she shows up for what she expects to be another party she learns the reality of what is happening. Jason threatens to send the photos she took with Amanda to her mom, her teammates, and her classmates. Lauren is so ashamed that she agrees to do what he is telling her to for fear of what might happen if the photos get sent out. As the exploitation continues Lauren is still attending school, she is home before her mom returns from work, raising very few red flags from those around her. She feels hopeless – desperately wanting help but fearful of what Jason might do if she tells someone.

The Role of Guardian Group

A Guardian Group analyst is scrolling through ads on the website Jason uses looking for indicators of trafficking. Something in the ad for Lucy raises suspicion. Through the analyst’s expertise and the information that Jason has included the analyst can determine Lucy’s real name is Lauren and she is not 19 years old but is 17. The analyst compiles all this valuable information into a report and sends it directly to law enforcement partners in the area. The report provides enough reasonable suspicion that the officer can take swift action. Removing Lauren from the unsafe situation and arresting Amanda and Jason.
