When you’re driving down the highway and see a billboard that says, “We Are Looking,” it might stop you for a moment. What does it mean? Who’s looking—and for what?

We’re looking for victims of sex trafficking right here in our own communities. Not overseas. Not just in major cities. But in neighborhoods like yours. And we’re not just looking alone—we’re inviting you to look with us.
Recognizing the Signs of Human Trafficking in Your Community
Human trafficking, especially sex trafficking, often hides in plain sight. The individuals being exploited may appear to be living normal lives. They could be working at your local gas station, staying at a nearby hotel, or sitting quietly at the back of your child’s school event.
Some common signs to watch for include:
1.A person who appears fearful, anxious, or submissive, especially in the presence of someone else who seems to be in control. Stereotypically, we often envision a controlling male, when in reality this person could be male or female.
2. Someone who doesn’t know where they are or seems confused about their surroundings.
3. Individuals with signs of physical abuse, malnourishment, or sleep deprivation.
4. Young women who avoid eye contact.
5. A young person dressed inappropriately for their age or the weather.
6. A young person you know that suddenly has unexplained expensive items, new tattoos, or sudden changes in behavior or appearance. They often will start to change their social circles, quitting sports or clubs they previously enjoyed.
What You Can Do
You don’t have to be a professional to make a difference. In fact, some of the most critical tips come from people like you—concerned citizens, parents, teachers, hotel workers, and utility employees—who are simply paying attention.
Stay aware of your surroundings—at rest stops, hotels, gas stations, and online.
Trust your gut. If something feels off, it probably is.
Report suspicious activity to local law enforcement or the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888.
Educate yourself and others on what trafficking looks like. Share this blog post or take a deeper dive here. Talk to your kids and coworkers.
